If you’ve been following along on my Instagram, you might have caught a few sneak peeks of a big project we’ve been quietly working on. Well, the wait is over—it’s time for the grand reveal! We just upgraded our old roof with stunning designer shingles, and honestly, we’re completely in love with how it turned out.
What began as a stressful surprise after a recent storm quickly turned into a blessing in disguise.
Thanks to insurance covering most of the expense, we were able to transform our roof in a way that seriously boosts both the look and lifespan of our home. We did a deep dive into all things roofing, so if this is on your home improvement radar, you’re in luck—we’ve got the scoop for you.
Our previous roof featured architectural shingles—already a nice step up from the basic 3-tab style—but we wanted to take it a notch higher with designer shingles.
Architectural shingles offer a solid, dimensional look and reliable durability, but designer shingles take things further. They’re thicker, richer in texture, and designed to mimic the elegance of premium materials like slate or cedar shake.
We chose a classic style with subtle tonal variations that add character without shouting for attention. It’s one of those details you might not immediately notice, but once you do, it completely changes the feel of the house.
So what makes designer shingles stand out?
First, they bring serious curb appeal—think the sophisticated look of upscale roofing materials without the extreme cost. Their heft and thickness make them tougher against strong winds and harsh weather, which is a huge bonus in storm-prone areas.
They’re built to last, often promising 30 to 50 years or more with the right installation. And with a wide range of colors and styles available, there’s a perfect match no matter your home’s personality.
Of course, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Designer shingles come with a higher upfront price, and their heavier weight means you’ll want to check your roof’s structure to make sure it can handle them. Plus, quality varies by brand, so it’s worth doing your homework to find a reputable product backed by strong warranties.
For us, this upgrade was totally worth it. It’s one of those rare home improvements that pays off not just in durability, but also in the joy you feel every time you look up. Our new roof looks like authentic slate, and it perfectly complements the rest of our home—from the textured brick to the freshly painted shutters, the new front door, and the flower beds we refreshed.
While we’re still dreaming about replacing the gutters (copper is definitely on the wish list), this roof upgrade feels like the perfect finishing touch for now.
If you’re facing a roof replacement, I hope our experience helps you navigate the options with a bit more confidence. This kind of transformation can truly elevate your home’s charm and resilience in one swoop—and that’s a win in my book.
